Everyone is a miracle worker. What does it mean to be a “miracle worker?” What does such a function entail and how do we achieve it? First, I would like to be clear on one thing; we are all called to be miracle workers, but it is up to our individual choice as to whether we will accept our calling.

So, what is a miracle? The answer appears to be complex, with definitions ranging from raising the dead to a simple act of kindness. But in fact, a miracle is not an outward action. It is an inward recognition. The simple recognition of Who You Are in truth, and how your mind fits into the Whole of Source God and all Creation. Understanding and accepting this truth is the source of all miracles, whether they manifest outwardly or not.

Why do we have to seemingly “re-learn” who we are? Why aren’t we born into this world with a fully functioning memory of where we came from?

We are each born with amnesia of Who We Are in truth because we chose to forget on purpose. We did this in order to learn from, and experience, a state where we are limited as opposed to infinite. Why? Because through such experience the Self can grow. But it is no easy path coming here into this dense, negative, separation-based world! And so, it is truly a miracle to remember oneself while we are here within the dream. It is miraculous to accept the truth of Who We Are; as God created us, as our identity as part of Him.

To offer a miracle to another then, is to remember Who They are, as part of our Oneself, our Identity as One Love. A Course In Miracles tells us that our Identity and our function are one in the same thing. “Identity and function are the same, and by your function do you know yourself.” (ACIM T.CH27 II.10:6)

How can a “function,” also be our “identity?” A Course In Miracles also tells us that our function is forgiveness. “Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world.” (ACIM W. Lesson 62).

So how can “forgiveness” be our Identity? In the world, forgiveness is considered an act, not an “identity,” so what does it mean here? A Course In Miracles tells us, “To forgive, is to overlook.” (ACIM T.CH9 IV.1:2)

Overlook what?

We are to overlook the world of separate forms and all its wants, needs, accusations and false desires. We are to overlook the forms of separation we see between us all, everywhere. To forgive, is to see to see only The Source Which Unites us and all creation, in all creation.

How do we do this?

Well, in order to overlook the world, you have to cease thinking about it. And when your thoughts about the world are quiet, your mind becomes still. It is in this Stillness, that you learn Everything is shared with all things, for to feel The Stillness, is to sense That Which Unites us all. It is God.

And so, our Identity is our function which is to recognize we are part of The Stillness of God. Because we are One with God, we are also His Stillness. To learn this is true, and believe it – to begin to truly live it – is a miracle. The world is then changed by the miracles you extend through forgiveness of it. You heal the sins (separation) of the world, through healing your mind of the thought that separation (sin) could ever be true.

To recap; you offer a miracle when you remember your Identity is your function, which is forgiveness. And forgiveness is to overlook the world of form, trusting instead in what your eyes cannot see; That Which Unites us all in Love as One. To do this, you must cease to think about separation (anything in the world) and focus instead on Unity. To wipe all thoughts of separation from your mind, you must cease to think about the world, your life, the lives of others and all the petty details living here entails.

Your mind will then enter a state of serene stillness. The Stillness of God. And here you will find yourself reflected in His Love – you will know you too, share in His power and His Light. You will experience your inner connection with the reality where you and God are One.

“Miracles are thoughts.” (ACIM T.CH1 I.12:1). If a miracle is a thought, then it is a miracle to change what you think you are, thus shifting to the truth in you.

Another idea associated with “thought” in A Course In Miracles, is prayer. And prayer too, is linked tightly with forgiveness. What we think, is what we are asking for more of – our minds are forever in a state of endless prayer, whether we are aware of our thoughts or not. Therefore, let our minds rest in a state of loving forgiveness – a state where we are not obsessing over the world, the past, or the future – but rather allowing all things to simply be, here in the peace of the present moment.

“It is not easy to realize that prayers for things, for status, for human love, for external “gifts” of any kind, are always made to set up jailers and to hide from guilt. These things are used for goals that substitute for God, and therefore distort the purpose of prayer. The desire for them is the prayer.” (ACIM Song of Prayer III.6:1-3)

“The goal of God is lost in the quest for lesser goals of any kind, and prayer becomes requests for enemies.” (ACIM Song of Prayer III.6:5)

“Think of the cost, and understand it well. All other goals are at the cost of God.” (ACIM Song of Prayer III.6:9-10)

And so, as a miracle worker, it is your function and most holy job, to offer only miracles with your loving mind. You offer miracles through forgiveness, which is also the highest form of prayer; the act of choosing only love, and allowing thoughts of all else to be still. It is a merging with the Mind of God – to will to join with His Will for peace.

“Forgiveness offers wings to prayer, to make its rising easy and its progress swift.” (ACIM Song of Prayer 2. Intro.1:1)

“Forgiveness is prayer’s ally; sister in the plan for your salvation.” (ACIM Song of Prayer 2. Intro.1:3)

Forgiveness then, is the force behind working miracles. Remember our function, our Identity, and offer only the highest form of prayer: a mind that is still and extending only God’s Love to all creation – from the smallest grain of sand, to your greatest “enemy,” to even those living far away on distant worlds.

Forgiveness is the key to the rise of the miracle minded miracle worker. It is the power to heal ourselves and this world, and it is in your very hands!

So how should we extend miracles to those around us we wish to heal? What is the best way to pray for others?

A Course In Miracles tells us to do only this: first, simply ask, “What should I do for him, Your holy Son? Should be the only thing you ever ask when help is needed and forgiveness sought.” (ACIM Song of Prayer section 2. III.5:1)

“It is to God you turn to hear what you should do. His answer will be clear as morning, nor is His forgiveness what you think it is.” (ACIM Song of Prayer section 2. III.6:10-11)

“Behold your brother there beyond the door; the Son of God as He created him.” (ACIM Song of Prayer section 2. III.7:8)

And who did God create us to be? How should we “see” our brothers and sisters, in order to heal them?

We are here to see one another as the perfection and love of God. This may seem impossible, given the atrocities humanity has brought upon the world, but even so, it is given us the task to remember the truth.

“We accept our part as saviors of the world, which through our joint forgiveness is redeemed.” (ACIM W. section 14. Intro. 3:2) “We look on everyone as brother, and perceive all things as kindly and as good.” (3:4) “We are concerned only with giving welcome to the truth.” (3:7)

“Is there a role for healing, then, that one can use to offer help for someone else?” (ACIM Song of Prayer section 3. III.4:1) “You but recognize your oneness with the one who calls for help. For in this oneness is his separate sense dispelled, and it is this that made him sick.” (4:6-7) “Healers there are, for they are Sons of God who recognize their Source, and understand that all their Source creates is one with them. This is the remedy that brings relief which cannot fail.” (5:1-2) “Sickness and separation must be healed by love and union.” (5:7) “The body’s healing will occur because its cause has gone.” (6:3)

So, in light of all we now know, there is a natural order our thoughts must take in order for healing to take place, and it is this:

“You first forgive, then pray, and you are healed.” (ACIM Song of Prayer section 3. IV.3:1) “You have understood that you forgive and pray but for yourself. And in this understanding you are healed. In prayer you have united with your Source, and understood that you have never left. This level cannot be attained until there is no hatred in your heart, and no desire to attack the Son of God.” (4:3-6)

And so, we come full circle in our understanding of our role as miracle workers; we are to become empty of the hatred and malice of the world, and embrace our Inner Stillness, through which God may enter to replace what we held onto before. Our instruction thus becomes very simple: “Be still an instant.” (7:4)

We must abandon our attachment to thoughts that hold us prisoner. We must let go of our obsession over special relationships – those relationships that hold so much expectation and need in us.

“The special relationships of the world are destructive, selfish and childishly egocentric… The Holy Spirit transforms them into perfect lessons in forgiveness and in awakening from the dream. Each one is an opportunity to let perceptions be healed and errors corrected… If the mind wants to use it (the body) for attack in any form, it becomes prey to sickness, age and decay. If the mind accepts the Holy Spirit’s purpose for it instead, it becomes a useful way of communicating with others, invulnerable as long as it is needed, and to be gently laid by when its use is over.” (ACIM T. preface xii)

And so, we learn how to first heal our mind – our thoughts – and the body will follow, living on indefinitely until our use for it in communicating God’s Love to others is finished. Such is our role as miracle workers if we have the small willingness to accept it.

To further enhance our understanding of our role as miracle workers, let us go deeper into some of the “Miracle Principles” from A Course In Miracles:

Chapter 1 THE MEANING OF MIRACLES

I. Principles of Miracles

“Miracles transcend the body.” (17:1).

Again, if miracles are thoughts, here we are called to cease to think about the body and all it entails here in the world – which is everything to do with it.

“Miracles are natural signs of forgiveness.” (21:1).

Never forget; to forgive is to cease to think about the body, the world and all its problems. It is a mind resting in peaceful, quiet, Stillness. You hold nothing against anyone, including yourself. There are simply no more thoughts to be had about striving for anything in the world. You simply rest in the stillness of God, knowing you are none of what your ego thinks you are.

“Miracles enable you to heal the sick and raise the dead because you made sickness and death yourself, and can therefore abolish both.” (24:1)

This is done simply by recognizing you no longer see sickness and death in anyone, anywhere. You acknowledge the truth of their Eternal Life and equality with you in God’s Love. Once this thought is believed to the point it is the only thought about others that fills your mind, you will work miracles through the Christ within you – and you will know it is not you who does them, but God. Miracles are merely a celebration and praise of your connection to God. It is to allow God’s Love to freely flow out from you to others.

“Miracles praise God through you. They praise Him by honoring His creations, affirming their perfection. They heal because they deny body-identification and affirm spirit-identification.” (29:1-3)

And here we learn that the most glorious way to praise God, is to love those with whom we have been created as One within Him, in His Spirit, not the body.

“I inspire all miracles, which are really intercessions. They intercede for your holiness and make your perceptions holy. By placing you beyond the physical laws they raise you into the sphere of celestial order. In this order you are perfect.” (32:1-3)

This is how we transcend all body-thoughts. We merely allow God to replace our thoughts of the world, with His perfect Thoughts; thoughts which rest only on our perfection, which then causes our mind to move vertically into the realm of “celestial order,” rather than “horizontally” along the lines of our worldly reality.

“Miracles restore the mind to its fullness.” (34:1)

Our “full mind” is our whole mind as God created us – not split between the ego and the Holy Spirit. Our thoughts of the world have been fully released.

“Miracles are expressions of love, but they may not always have observable effects.” (35:1)

Do not be discouraged if your extension of God’s Love seems to have no healing effect. All expressions of love work miracles, but sometimes on a level that is beyond this world entirely. We must trust that God will carry them out as promised.

“Miracles are examples of right thinking, aligning your perceptions with truth as God created it.” (36:1)

We now understand a miracle is a forgiveness, which is to overlook the body and instead “feel” The Stillness (our Oneness) we share with all things as part of God’s creation in eternal perfection. Our perception shifts from external to internal. We acknowledge only the inside and overlook the outside. This is true forgiveness.

“The miracle acknowledges everyone as your brother and mine. It is a way of perceiving the universal mark of God.” (40:1-2)

What is the “universal mark of God?” It is the Love you carry within yourself, which you recognize as part of your One Self.

“It is a way of loving your neighbor as yourself. You recognize your own and your neighbor’s worth simultaneously.” (18:3-4)

And here we come to the greatest commandment of Jesus: To love one another as we would love ourselves. This is what miracles come down to. This is the essence of what it means to be a miracle worker. You recognize yourself in all whom you see or think of. You recognize your Oneself in all creation – “the universal mark of God.”

So, rise dear miracle worker, rise! Rise up to your full potential and do what you came here to do! Forgive the world, thus healing it of all sin (separation). It is no small task, but the means are simple, if we are but willing to believe in the truth about ourselves. Let us allow God to work through us, thus extending the miracles He would give to all. There is no end to the ways God can and will extend His Love to the world through us if we but step aside and let Him. Let us then, allow our minds to be still an instant so we can all go Home. Amen.

“To the ego’s dark glass you need but say, “I will not look there because I know these images are not true.”” (ACIM CH4 IV.9:2)

“The Second Coming of Christ means nothing more than the end of the ego’s rule and the healing of the mind.” (ACIM CH IV.10:2)

“To heal, then, is to correct perception in your brother and yourself by sharing the Holy Spirit with him. This places you both within the Kingdom, and restores its wholeness in your mind.” (ACIM CH7 II.2:1-2)
